Registered Respiratory Therapists

Registered Respiratory Therapists perform the same job duties as Certified Respiratory Therapists yet are more involved in developing and implementing protocols and treatment plans, health promotion, disease prevention, and disease management.

  • The first pathway includes an associate degree from an accredited education program, 4 years of full-time, supervised experience in respiratory therapy, and 62 hours of college coursework, including mathematics, chemistry, physics, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology classes. 

  • The second pathway includes an associate degree with 2 years of full-time, supervised experience and possessing the certified respiratory therapist credential. 

  • The third pathway includes a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than respiratory care, with 62 hours of college coursework in mathematics, chemistry, physics, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology and 2 years of full-time clinical experience.
