MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

(MLT)

Medical lab technicians assist doctors and other specialists by performing a wide array of tests on blood, tissue and other bodily fluids of which the results can be used to diagnose and treat patients.

EDUCATION REQUIRED

You must be a high school graduate or equivalent and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Complete a clinical laboratory training program approved/accredited by an organization approved by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and pass the MLT generalist exam

Or

  • Earned an associate’s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology (60 semester hours of which 24 are either medical laboratory technology courses or 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours biology, and 12 hours of courses in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination and pass the MLT generalist exam

Or

  • Successfully complete an official US military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and earn the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician)
